ANSTO Information, Resources & Capabilities

ANSTO has state of the art facilities and extensive expertise in the areas of materials characterisation, structural integrity and remaining life assessment. Materials Characterisation facilities include an extensive range of microscopy facilities including optical, scanning and transmission electron microscopes with quantitive analysis capabilities. Surface and interface characterisation facilities include a nano indenter and an atomic force microscope. The integrity and remaining life of structures is assessed using specialised materials testing facilities for creep, fatigue and fracture toughness tests at a range of temperatures (-196 to 1500 oC). ANSTO has specific expertise in miniaturised and elevated temperature testing and the development of non-standard testing equipment.A dedicated group of specialists use extensive specialised finite element analysis software for the assessment of the behaviour and subsequent performance of complex components. Areas of expertise include heat transfer, stress, creep, fracture, fatigue, design optimisation and seismic analysis. Codes available include NISA and ABAQUS.Non-destructive evaluation facilities include radiographic and ultrasonic equipment and the capability to develop and prototype specialised inspection systems including advanced signal processing and data analysis.
